School Days ~ Monday, September 18, 2023

This school with the brown linoleum hallway floors and the globe lights and the pencil sharpeners and the long wands that were topped with window latches for opening and closing the windows, and the cloak rooms and the chalk boards. This was the place I returned to every September for nine years. From age 5 to 14. I loved it more than my own home.

Tulis I love this!! I also have such fond memories of JJJ. I remember hanging out in the playground with you, and of course our wonderful “Bits from Broadway” show in which we both starred…..Thanks for bringing this all back. love Harlow

As I prepare for my 40th high school reunion, this story strikes a chord. I too remember school as a magical place, starting in Kindergarten at Colesville Elementary. We had cubbies with our names on them where we would put our coats. School boxes with bright yellow pencils, a small pack of crayons, a big pink eraser, small scissors, and Elmers white glue. We had lunch boxes too with sandwiches wrapped in wax paper and milk money (a nickel) taped to the inside lid. During recess we got to climb the mulberry tree and eat as many as we could reach – coming down with purple fingers and faces – the perfect dessert. The memories of middle and high school are less poignant as the time felt more transient. We moved around the building, had many different teachers each semester, and social pressures took away some of the joy, but not all. They’ve arranged a tour of my old high school on Friday night with the big event following on Saturday. I’m excited to see what feelings come as we wander the halls and visit with old friends.

Ah yes. Sounds so organized. Someone gave you all serious care.

Thanks, Tuli – I have roamed those hallways and stairwells and BIG classrooms flooded with light for years in dreams and daydreams and memories. What a blessing.

Yes indeed. It was and still is a magic lair.
